Inspirations in the bush and the city in South Africa

These days, we’re always on the lookout for inspiration. On a recent trip to South Africa with our daughters, we were especially lucky to not just come across amazing projects, but human beings who remind us of what really matters: leaving the world a better place than how we found it.

Though we have many beautiful memories from our travels, one of our standout moments had to be the days we spent among the Baobabs and butterflies at Few and Far, a new ecolodge in the Limpopo Province set among a sweeping valley home to more biodiversity than all of Europe. Not only did the entire team there make us feel like a family, which is something we always endeavour to do with our guests at La Cura, but we truly sensed a kinship with their mission to rewild and restore their land that was recuperating for years spent as an old school farm. In talks with their onsite ecologist, Dawn Cory Toussaint, who is leading the team's conservation efforts, we learned so much from their practices and felt emboldened to continue with our own projects of restoring the ecosystem around La Cura to its most natural form. Much like the team at Few and Far, we hope to continue to welcome like-minded nature enthusiasts who understand the need for environmental protection, chemical-free farming, and sustainability.

Then came Cape Town. After the stillness of the bush, the city was quite a jolt, but a welcome one nonetheless. One morning, a little after the sun poked out from behind table mountain, we stumbled upon the Oranjezicht City Farm and Market Day. A short walk from the V&A waterfront, this weekly farmers market was jam-packed with locals and tourists alike, eager to sample organic produce like honey, olive oil, jams, nuts and seeds, breads, vegetables and fruit. For us, the sheer number of people attending reaffirmed that the tide is turning: we as human beings, whether we live in cities or in the countryside, are craving a return to nature. We want organic produce not just on our tables, but in our skincare, in our candles, scents, oils and more. Ever since, Mabel hasn’t stopped dreaming about hosting her own weekly market right here on our land. And knowing her, dreams have a funny way of becoming reality, especially around La Cura.

We'll be back soon with more from La Cura. But in the meantime, if you're heading to South Africa, please do visit these wonderful teams. Tell them Bob and Mabel say hello.
